Q+A with Sam Gagner

What were your first impressions of the Firefly Recovery device when you first started using it?

I really liked how easy it was to use and to travel with. I was able to use it to aid my recovery on the go and really felt it helped my body recover from hard workouts that would normally make me sore.

Can you walk us through how you incorporate the Firefly Recovery device into your daily training and recovery routine?

I normally use the Firefly after a really hard workout or skate and love to use it when I am traveling. I can wear them on the plane or on the bus and while I’m walking around and can really feel the difference afterwards.

Have you noticed any significant changes in your performance or recovery time since you started using the Firefly Recovery device?

Absolutely. I just went through bi-lateral hip surgery and mitigating inflammation was very important to my recovery. The increase in blood flow from the Firefly device has been essential to helping me get back to playing.

How user-friendly do you find the Firefly Recovery device, especially in comparison to other recovery methods you've tried?

I think it’s the best recovery tool on the market when it comes to being user friendly. Very easy to understand and use and great for when you are on the go.

Given your travel schedule, how convenient is it to carry and use the Firefly Recovery device on the go?

Given the size of the Firefly device it’s great to travel with. I am able to carry them in my backpack or carry-on bag and put them on when I get on the plane.

How do you manage the mental and emotional pressures that come with competing at the highest levels?

It is very important to decompress from the sport whenever you can. Our schedule is very difficult with all the travel and games we play and I try to unplug in a number of different ways. Whether that be reading a book, listening to podcasts or getting out in nature. I also have three kids and love spending time with them which really helps me to take my mind off the game.

Hockey players can notoriously be creatures of habit. Do you have any pre-game rituals or routines that you follow consistently, and how do they help you prepare for a game?

I have had the same pre-game meal and pre-game routine for just about every game I have played in the NHL. I wouldn’t consider myself a very superstitious person, but I find a consistent routine helps me to know that my mind and body are ready come game time.

Throughout your career in the NHL, what have been some of the most memorable moments or achievements for you, and why do they stand out?

I think my most memorable moment so far in the NHL is the night I scored 8 points against the Chicago Blackhawks in 2012. The way I felt on the ice and the support of the fans is something I will never forget.

Tell us a bit about your comeback from multiple hip surgeries. How has your routine changed to start this season and how are you feeling on the ice?

It’s been a long road to recovery. The summer was very tedious and time consuming, but I am very happy with how I am feeling after all the hard work I put in. Firefly was very helpful in reducing inflammation and helping my recovery day to day. There is still a lot of work ahead as I adjust to playing games at the NHL level, but I am ready for the challenge.

The youth movement in the NHL has changed the way the game is played for some. Has your playing style evolved over the years, and what adjustments have you made to adapt to the changing dynamics of the league?

I think the game has gotten a lot faster since I came into the league. Most teams have 4 lines that can play and every night is a tough test. You always have to adapt to the league and add different elements to your game to stay around. I came into the league as an offense first player and I’ve worked really hard to adjust to add different elements whether that be penalty killing or being trusted in a checking role. I’ve always tried to add foot speed which is tougher as you get older, but if you think the game at a high level and be confident in your skills it allows you to play fast which is something I always try to focus on.
